Catch of the Day: Facebook Wants to Make a PAC(t) with the Government
This wouldn’t have shown up in your News Feed–I mean, your Top Stories–but Facebook wants to make a PAC(t) with the government, or at least certain representatives thereof. According to a New York Times article today:
“FB PAC will give our employees a way to make their voice heard in the political process by supporting candidates who share our goals of promoting the value of innovation to our economy while giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected,” a company spokesman said.
I grant that Facebook has helped make millions of peoples’ voices heard in News Feeds and Top Stories and Timelines the world over, many among groups of people far larger than my 300-some friends. But the flip side of warm fuzzies like a “more open and connected” world isn’t necessary cold pricklies. It’s privacy and respect for the individual, not just the corporation. See how I shifted the frame? So keep an eye on Facebook… and its dollars.
